   “You know…” He immediately felt her gaze shift from the slowly lightening sky to rest on the side of his face that she could see. He paused, feeling her single-minded attention acutely.
   “Yeah?” Suzume was wearing her cloak again. The captain had informed her a few times that the cloak was unnecessary for summer missions, but she insisted on wearing it. It was her prized possession and he swore she treated it better than she treated herself – each tear was lovingly sewn back together and the hood was almost molded to the shape of her head. He noticed things like this.
   “Suzume, do you think you’re ready for this?” He glanced at her as he asked, and her face immediately lit up.
   “Of course! Captain taught us well, right? We’re definitely ready!” She made a fist and grinned at him. He glanced from her face to the two glinting pieces of metal laying next to her, too close for his comfort.
   “Hm.” Mamura had his doubts about that.
   “If you don’t want to be here, Mamura, you know you don’t have to.” Suzume scooted a half inch over and he froze involuntarily before slowly, consciously, relaxing once again. “Yuyuka told me that you could have gone to the Military Police if you’d wanted to. They’d let you back in, wouldn’t they?”
   “Not now,” Mamura said, switching his gaze from her face to his knees. This was a lie. His father had repeatedly entreated him not to join the Scouting Legion, but there had been other concerns - notably, the girl sitting next to him.
